Nagykázmér (Slovak: Veľký Kazimír) is a part of the municipality of Kázmér, formerly an independent village in the Tőketerebes district of the Kassa region in Slovakia, but it was part of the Kingdom of Hungary. The ruins of Kázmér’s castle/castellum are located in the centre of the settlement, on Hrunok hill, rising above the Izra stream.

Kázmér Castle on my map

The first time we read about the settlement of Kázmér was in 1270, in the charter of King István V. Jr. about the estates of Füzér. The castle estate was adjacent to the village of Kázmér, which belonged to the nobleman Péter. There is no mention of a castle in the charter, nor is it mentioned until 1561. However, the family who called themselves the Kázmérys implies the existence of a fortress, which was probably built in the mid-13th century.

On 23 June 1347, the Palatine summoned a meeting to Kassa to exterminate the evildoers and robbers. Among the delegates from Abaújvár (“Abawyuar”) were several members of the Kázmér family: István of Kázmér, son of Miklós, and Dénes, son of Mykoucha of Kázmér. The members of the family appear in 15th-century documents as ‘de Kazmer’. Also, the settlement was mentioned in the census of the Eger Chapter in 1364.

Nagykázmér is mentioned separately in 1454 for the first time in the sources as “Nagykazmer”. It was the property of the Török and later the Berchtold family.

The only known document about the castle dates from 1561. On 21 April, at the Zemplén county assembly, Kozmay János lodged a protest against Kázméry Lajos, because Kázméry Lajos had beaten one of his serfs, named Gál Kálmán (providus), who was ploughing the fields of Kozmay Péter, and then dragged him to the castellum in the possession of Kázmér and detained him there for three days, and after the three days had elapsed, handed him over to the bailiff, who released him only on bail and until the day of the review of the case. Not satisfied with this, Kázméry Lajos used abusive and insulting words against one of the protesting servants, whom he found in his own field, and would have beaten him if Ujfalussy János had not defended him.

It is not mentioned in other written records, and the date and circumstances of its destruction are unclear.

The castle hill, 80 metres long and 20-30 metres wide, is divided into two parts, the lower part now housing a church. It may have been the outpost of Kázmér’s castle. On the higher, southern part of the hill, a stump of a 21 x 14 m palace, once 3 storeys high, stands two storeys high; the remains of its northern wall can be seen in the side of a pit. About 10 metres south of the ‘palace’ was another two-storey building, but this can now only be seen on the LIDAR image.
